An Operating System is the software which interacts with the hardware of a computer and serves as the intermediary between applications and the hardware, including peripheral devices such as a printer, a computer mouse or a keyboard. When you run an application, it sends requests to the OS through an API (Application Program Interface) and the interaction is done via a command line or a Graphical User Interface (GUI). Just like a personal computer, web hosting servers also have an Operating System which functions as a host for all of the software installed on them, which includes script apps or server-side software such as a flash server, a VOIP server, and many others. A virtual machine can be set up on a physical one, so you can install a guest OS on it and have a different system environment in contrast with the physical server host Operating System.
Multiple OS in VPS
Our virtual private server
packages include three Linux releases that you could pick from for the Operating System of your new hosting server - Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS. Apart from being absolutely free, the OSs are very stable and secure and the main reason to offer you all three of them is to ensure that you can run each app that you would like, because different pieces of software could have different requirements regarding the environment they work on. Each of the three OSs is supported by a large community of developers who have generated thousands of software packages which you can install and use on your VPS. Based on the Operating System that you select, you will also be able to choose between three different Control Panels to control your website hosting content. Needless to say, in case you decide that you need a new OS, we can always re-install the server with it. As an optional upgrade, we also offer you weekly updates of the Operating System for maximum stability and security.
Multiple OS in Dedicated Hosting
If you decide to obtain one of our dedicated servers
, you will find three Operating Systems on the order page because we want to give you a broader choice for the system environment on the server as different applications can have particular requirements. CentOS, Ubuntu and Debian come with different modules developed by their large support communities, so you can select each of these OSs and take advantage of a stable and secure Internet hosting service. Depending on your selection, you'll also have different Control Panels to choose from. Of course, we can always replace the Operating System if the one you've selected in the beginning doesn't meet the requirements of the software which you intend to run. We can also update the OS regularly in order to keep it as secure as possible through our Managed Services upgrade package.
